The blank hours field on your Google profile is quietly costing you calls
Most lawn care and landscaping profiles list no hours. Why that hurts in fall cleanup season, how Google treats it, and the fifteen-minute fix.
A homeowner looks at three lawn care listings on a Saturday morning. Two say "Open now". Yours says nothing at all. Which one do you think gets the call about leaf cleanup?
This is the most common mistake we see on landscaping and lawn care Google profiles, and it is also the easiest one to fix. Across 91,717 listings in our data, 52.5% show no business hours. Only 28.3% show Saturday hours, which is strange for a trade where Saturday is when most homeowners are home looking at their yard.
Why owners leave it blank
The reasoning makes sense from the truck. You are not a storefront. You are on a mower from 7 to 5, and nobody can walk in. Some owners worry that listing hours means they have to answer every call in that window. Others set up the profile years ago, skipped the field, and never went back.
But the hours field is not about walk-ins. On Google it controls three things that matter to a service business.
What blank hours actually do
You lose the "Open now" label. On a phone, Google shows "Open" or "Closed" right under the name. A listing with no hours shows neither. Next to two competitors marked open, a blank looks like a company that might not exist anymore.
You can drop out of "open now" searches. When someone searches with a time filter, or Google decides the search implies it, listings with no hours are easy to skip. Searches like "lawn care open today" or "landscaper open Saturday" are exactly the urgent, ready-to-book searches you want.
It signals an unfinished profile. Google says plainly that complete, accurate profiles help local ranking. Hours are one of the most visible fields. Leaving them blank does not get you penalized, but it gives the competitor with a finished profile an edge on every search you share.
The fix, in fifteen minutes
Set hours you actually answer the phone. Not the hours you mow. If you or someone in the office picks up from 7 to 6 on weekdays and 8 to noon on Saturday, list exactly that. If calls go to a text-back after hours, that is fine. The point is that someone responds.
Add Saturday. Even a short window. In this trade the weekend is when homeowners notice the yard, and the share of competitors listing Saturday is low. A four-hour Saturday window is a cheap way to look open when most of the field looks closed.
Use special hours for holidays. Google lets you set one-off hours for Thanksgiving and the December holidays. Profiles that do this show accurate status, and Google occasionally prompts owners to confirm them. It takes two minutes.
Add "More hours" if you offer something distinct. If you run snow removal, you can list it as a separate set of hours. A profile that shows 24-hour snow response in December is a profile that gets the 5 a.m. call.
Turn on messaging, or put your text line in the description. If you list hours, make it easy to reach you inside them. Calls you cannot pick up on the mower should get a text back within a minute. The missed calls guide has the exact message and the math on what a missed fall cleanup call is worth.
Why fall is the time to fix it
Fall cleanup, aeration and overseeding bookings happen in a short window. So do the first conversations about next year's maintenance contract. A homeowner who books a leaf cleanup with you in October is a strong candidate for a spring contract, and the one who booked with the competitor is not.
Then winter. If you plow or do holiday lighting, your profile needs to look alive in December, and a profile with accurate hours and recent posts does. A dead-looking profile in January also makes March harder, because you start spring with fewer reviews and less activity than the companies that stayed visible.
The other blank fields to check while you are in there
Hours is the biggest, but it travels with a few others. While you are logged in:
- Website. 34.6% of listings link no site. Companies with one carry a median of 13 reviews against 2 for those without.
- Services. Each service, from mowing to mulch to snow removal, listed separately with a short description.
- Photos. Recent ones. A before and after of a real fall cleanup from this month beats a stock photo of a lawn.
- Service area. Six to ten real towns, not the whole metro.
The Google Business Profile guide walks through each field in order, and the benchmark report shows how your profile compares to the rest of the trade.
The takeaway
The hours field takes fifteen minutes to fill in and it shows on every search. Most of the competition has not done it. That is about as cheap as a competitive advantage gets in this business.
